Sophie Cundale
The Near Room (2020)
We are delighted to be presenting Sophie Cundale’s FVU-commissioned film The Near Room (2020) for the first time on FVU Watch this month. The Near Room unfolds as an absurd psychological melodrama, exploring themes of loss and its aftermath. The film poses the question of how we make sense of experiences in flux—whether moments of grief, ecstasy, or crisis—without providing clear answers.
The narrative follows two individuals whose near-death experiences intertwine: a boxer, preparing for a fight, begins to experience strange psychological visions after being knocked out in the ring. His concussion-induced hallucinations transport him to a shadowy alternate reality, where a queen mourns the death of her prince, her grief so vivid that she believes herself to be dead.
Writer and critic Maria Walsh has produced a newly commissioned text reflecting on recurrent themes explored through Sophie Cundale’s broader practice, and the concept of the ‘clinch’ as depicted in The Near Room (2020). Click HERE to read.
