Marcus Coates’ video Follow the Voice (2009) is a study in human/non-human affinities, in which some of the mundane, unremarked sounds of everyday human activity find a curious echo in the cries and calls of birds and other creatures. A playful reference to Darwin’s ‘The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals’, the piece is a prescient herald of an interest in notions of interspecies kinship and ecological entanglement that has burgeoned in recent years.

In his new essay In Unison, Steven Bode tunes into the lingering resonances of Marcus Coates’ work, and how its ecological message reverberates in the present.
