Patrick Hough's Jerwood/FVU Awards work And If In A Thousand Years is the centrepiece of his first institutional solo exhibition in Ireland: False Starts. The exhibition explores props and décor from the Hollywood Dream Factory which take on new lives as precious mementos of cinema history - fake fragments of the past that have acquired a strange kind of authenticity.
And If In A Thousand Years takes us to the Californian desert, where the remains of Cecil B. DeMille’s 1923 film set for The Ten Commandments was uncovered by archaeologists. CGI animation merges with laser scanned landscapes and live action footage to conjure the image of a roaming sphinx, untethered from its plasterwork body and in search of identity and purpose.
