Blood shows as part of Performing Gender, an exhibition of audiovisual works that deconstruct, question and criticise the relationship between gender and society. Through theatrical performance, documentary filmmaking, and experimental film, artists blur the lines of male-female binary conformity.
In Marianna Simnett's film, commissioned for the Jerwood/FVU Awards 2015, blood is explored in both its material and its mythological dimensions. It features Lali, a ‘sworn virgin’ from the north of Albania, who has renounced her biological identity and elected, from an early age, to live life as a man.
Marianna will give a free artist talk at the gallery on Saturday 20 May. Find out more.
