Emergence from Underground: 80s alternative film and video culture and Michael O’Pray

Screening & Talk

Event overview

This screening at BFI Southbank is in memory of Film and Video Umbrella founder, Michael O’Pray, who died last year. A tribute to Mike’s pioneering commitment to championing innovative figures from the worlds of experimental film and video art, the programme is a snapshot of some of the creative energies that surfaced in the 1980s, and which Mike’s talents as programmer and writer helped to focus and popularise. The programme will feature titles by Derek Jarman, Holly Warburton, Gorilla Tapes, Bill Viola, Kenneth Anger and Andy Warhol, and will be introduced by FVU Director Steven Bode.

A brief history of FVU's early touring programmes, including the many curated by Michael O'Pray, are now online in our 'Projects' section, starting with 1985.
