Lawrence Lek's Jerwood/FVU Awards work Geomancer screens as part of an evening of discussion centred on the theme: Film in the Age of Non-Human Authors. In Geomancer, 'Geo', an artificially intelligent satellite, decides it wants to be an artist. Set in Singapore in the year 2065, the film uses the building blocks of computer gaming technology to generate a visually captivating backdrop. Meanwhile the narrative invites far-reaching questions about the nature of creativity, and how it might manifest in a post-biological world.
After the screening, Lawrence Lek and artist and researcher Alex Anikina discuss their video-based practice, including ideas around automation, algorithmic generative film and post-human cinema.
