Hetain Patel talks about his work, including Don't Look at the Finger, showing in exhibition in the gallery. Admission is free, but booking is required.
Don't Look at the Finger presents a wedding ceremony where bodies speak physically through ritual, combat and signed languages. It draws from several highly stylised and recognisable visual conventions including Hong Kong martial arts movies and West African wedding ceremonies. Propelled by a metamorphosing soundtrack and transforming costumes, the film challenges our expectations about all of the elements we encounter - a reminder of how some of the signature symbols of cultural traditions and languages can become interestingly blurred and entangled.
Also showing is Patel's sculpture The Other Suit 2, a life-sized model of the artist wearing a custom-made, hand-painted Spider-Man suit.
