Screening and Walk: Memory Marathon

Simon Pope

Event

Event overview

Film and Video Umbrella’s retrospective programme of 25 key projects from its history begins with this ambitious, participatory film piece by artist Simon Pope. A document of, and exercise in, collective memory, the film follows a marathon route across London that Pope walked, in relay, with over 100 London residents, who each recalled a stand-out image from a previous Olympic Games. Filmed early on in the lead-up to London 2012, Memory Marathon is also a record of the changing face of the city at that time. In this special screening at the ICA, Pope looks back on the work (and its making), and the places he walked through, now that the London games has itself passed into memory. As a companion to Memory Marathon, Pope will perform a new participatory walk, Wheels of Peacock Blue, Gas Jet Blue, circumnavigating the site of the Olympic Park. This walk, on the morning of Sunday September 8, is being organised in association with The White Building.
