Marianna Simnett's The Bird Game (2019) and Confessions of a Crow (2021) screens on MUBI to coincide with Frieze x MUBI: Summer Sessions.
In partnership with curated streaming platform MUBI, Frieze presents a series of interviews with artists to discuss contemporary classic films and the impact on their work. While Marianna Simnett discusses Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin (2013) in an interview on 2 June, The Bird Game and Confessions of a Crow both screen for the duration of the Summer Sessions week.
The Bird Game is a wicked fairy tale in which a loquacious and bloodthirsty crow, voiced by Joanne Whalley, lures six children to a secluded mansion and snares them in a sequence of deranged games. Confessions of a Crow is a companion to The Bird Game that draws out the ideas and influences of the film and deftly echoes its structure and mood. Assembling reflections from artists, writers and creative collaborators, it integrates them with the maverick musical musings of Simnett's ringleader Crow herself.
The Bird Game (2019) by Marianna Simnett was produced by Film and Video Umbrella (Producer Sophie Neave) and co-commissioned by the Rothschild Foundation, Frans Hals Museum, and Film and Video Umbrella. FVU is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
