Don't Look at the Finger presents a wedding ceremony where bodies speak physically through ritual, combat and signed languages. It draws from several highly stylised and recognisable visual conventions including Hong Kong martial arts movies and West African wedding ceremonies. Propelled by a metamorphosing soundtrack and transforming costumes, the film challenges our expectations about all of the elements we encounter - a reminder of how some of the signature symbols of cultural traditions and languages can become interestingly blurred and entangled.
The film shows at The New Art Gallery Walsall, along with Patel's The Other Suit 2, a life-sized sculpture of the artist wearing a custom-made, hand-painted Spider-Man suit.
